Do you have brothers and sisters?
I have an older sister and a younger brother. As a middle kid I was always too young to play with my sister and her friends (at least that's what she told me) and too old to play with my brother and his friends (at least that's what I told myself, besides they were boys!) so I learned to entertain myself.
What did you like to do when you were growing up?
I liked to read and make up stories. I liked to ride my bike to the neighborhood swimming pool, and I liked to go to the library.
What did you like about the library?
It was a special treat when my mom took me to the library. I don't remember that my brother or sister liked to go. When I got older, I could walk there. Sometimes I went with a friend. I liked to find my own books in the Children's Room on the lower level. I spent lots of hours there, deciding which books to take home. When I grew up, I became a librarian in my own Children's Room.
Did you like school?
I liked school, but I was just a so-so student. I liked to do my homework, though, really! Especially Language Arts--spelling and English grammar.
What is your favorite book?
I love so many books! When I was very young I my favorite book was The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins. When I got older I loved Charlotte's Web by E. B. White. My favorite grown-up book is Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.
What is the first book you could read by yourself?
My aunt was a first grade teacher. She gave me a copy of The Cat in the Hat. I read it to myself so many times that I knew it by heart. Then I read it to my little brother. He loved it, too.
